What To Know Before Buying A Printer

In order to transfer an electronic document into a material item, you will need a printer. This is a device that turns the electronic data from your computer into a readable product, usually printing on paper or transparencies.

Oftentimes printers are connected to a computer by way of a Universal Serial Bus, or UBS, cable. Some printers, however, have wireless or Ethernet capabilities and can be used as a wireless device and on a network of computers. Some modern printers work directly with electronic media like memory cards and sticks or digital cameras. Some are even equipped with devices like scanners; fax machines; and copiers. Most printers run slowly, with thirty pages printed per page considered fast. This makes their efficiency somewhat low, and their cost of production is high. For this reason, most printers for in-home and office use are manufactured with the intention of providing lower volume jobs.

There are several different kinds of printers available on the market today:

Toner-based printers use technology similar to photocopiers by placing toner in a light-sensitive print and utilizing static electricity to transfer it to the paper. It is then fused to the paper with heat and pressure. This is called the Xerographic principle and the most common devices using it are laser printers.

In order to do this, precision lasers must be used. These lasers provide enough heat and pressure to fuse the toner and materials, and they are available as black and white or color devices. Typically, they are most common in offices as they are very expensive.

Liquid inkjet printers are the most common printers owned by average consumers. They use drops of liquid or ink in varying amounts and dye the paper. Solid ink printers, on the other hand, make use of solid sticks of colored ink. These are melted and sprayed onto the paper by way of a print drum in order to transfer the image to the page.

Liquid inkjets are more common for home use and, as the name implies, they use liquid ink to produce images. The ink is applied directly to print the image.

Lastly, there are both thermal ultraviolet (UV) ink-less printers available for use. These use alternatives to ink-based units, but are not necessarily used at home or the office. UV machines are actually still being developed with the intention that ultraviolet lights will work with special chemicals to produce images on paper. Thermal units are typically used for monochromatic items to make receipts in cash registers and Automatic Teller Machines.
